All Dayer at Woodkirk Valley

Saturday the 8th of February ..The day was well organised by Rob from fifth Goodbye. It was nice to see so many people having a good time. The event was well attended by local young people and from bands from Morley and Leeds putting on a great show.
A band to look out for in the future is F*** Nose. A really energetic new band from Morley. This band is a side project of members from Esclavage, Slinn formerly of Mizkarrage and Jamie from Eborsisk.
Misled Vision played a brilliant set but didn't seem to get the crowd attention they deserved. I think this was because the majority of young people there were punk based rather than metal based. Jan has a great voice and adds a new dimension to rock music. Heather is just a natural drummer who makes drumming look effortless. Kim plays a quieter role but is just as important to the band's sound and what can i say about Eege but insane!!!
BooleyThe Drummer from Dumflux had the crowd screaming for more with his insane onstage antics. His hands were bleeding and he still continued thrashing the skins for all he was worth, loosing his sticks, running out to get them back and pulling the most amusing faces I have ever seen. In Booley we see the rise of the drummer as a front man.
The day was a little too punk for my taste but the majority of the crowd seemed to love it.
Well Done Rob!!!

FIRST OF LEEDS RIOTERS APPEAR IN COURT.

The first of the rioters arested after last years Leeds festival have appeared in couert and admitted taking part in the trouble which resulted in more than 250,000 pounds damage as festival goer's clashed with riot police.
At Leeds Magistrates Court on the 14th of January two 18 year olds Stuart Gunn of Strathaven nr Glasgow and Nicholas Jones of Wrexham, pleaded guilty to using or threatening unlawful violence after the festivals closing night on sunday August 25th. Sentence was deferred, while a further eight have been cited to appear in connetion with the riots.
The Temple Newsame site was turned into a war zone according to prosecutor Helen Gaunt, as a crowd estimated as between 200 and 500 strong burned 71 toilets and a portable office to the ground.
Melvyn Benn, of promoters Mean Fiddler, welcomed the proseution of the trouble makers. "I hope that it will emphasise that it is criminal, it's not just a bit of fun and the reality is that these people will have a criminal record that will stay with them through their lives.
Taken from NME 25.1.03 edition

Leeds Fest idiots are charged
A group of youn idiots really tried to spoil the Leeds Festivals chances of happening again. Toilets were burned and people's property and safety were of little value to the people involved.

Two eighteen year olds have been convicted of using or threatening unlawful violence at Leeds festival last August after pleading guilty. They will be sentenced at a later date.

A total of fifteen people, including five juveniles, have been charged following the trouble, with the other cases yet to come to court. Although this trouble has raised questions about the future of the festival, Mean Fiddler seemed confident just after last years event that it would continue there in 2003.

Lets just hope that more of these fools are caught and reprimanded for their actions. The Leeds festival is one of our most valuable experiences and we should work together for the good of each other to ensure the long running success of this event. Let's name and shame this year...take your camera's and if anyone does anything wrong record it and get them stopped!!!! But ensure the safety of yourselves and anyone else with or around you by being discreet and safe.

Heap Big Change
Fans of local Band Trash Heap Heroes were stunned by rumours that the band had called it a day, but they need not despair - the trio will be back.
The Teenagers will return to the pub scene in April with a new member, new tunes and a new name , LOST BREED.
The popular punk band who had their last gig at the Woodkirk vValley Country Club drew an audience of more than 200, have decided to have a complete change of direction.
Scrapping their 16 song playlist which was inspired by the likes of Green Day, Nirvana and Blink 182 they are looking to create a more mature rock sound.
Lead singer Nathan Snowden, 18, said  "We are going for a different, more proffessional sound, more rock and more melodic, a sound we know people will like"
The decision was not taken lightly as it involves writting new music and songs and risking their established fan base.
Nath said "We were pleased with what we achieved with Trash Heap Heroes but before we got more serious we sat down and talked and decided we had taken it as far as it could go"
And their acheivements since they formed two years agoare not to be sneezed at. They have played 60 gigs, can be heard regularly on local radio, have been reviewed in national music publications LMS and Random, established their own independant label and produced a CD called Let's Go which sold 300 copies in just three months.
But Nath added that they wanted to lose their reputation as a band with very young fans and expand out to new venues reluctant to stage punk bands.
"But we are not changing to meet the market" Paul Heppenstall, 19, hastilyt added "That is totaly what we are against. We want to play the music we want to play and which will be popular with the people we want to play for"
Before making their decision they had found themselves playing more rock in practices and they believe this will attract a broader audience and enable them to appear at new venues across the region.
Now Brothers Mark and Paul Heppenstall and Nath Snowden have been joined by guitarist Richard Thornton foormerly of Dub City have penned three new songs and are looking forward to a bright future. They will be appearing at the Albion Pub on Bridge Street on April 19th.

Bad News for Morley!!

Bright Young Things 2003 line-up announced...

December 2002

Here are the names of the 15 musicians and bands chosen for Bright Young Things 2003: SAMSA - SLY MR FOX - THE BLACKOUT BAND - THE 42 TONES - THE MIDNIGHT SHOPPERS - BLAKE - LEMONT SYLVESTER - DR STRANGEMOOSE - RHODE ISLAND - AMELIA & ME - EXIT - THE COUDERHAE CONNECTION - SOLO - ALL IT'S WORTH - ICABOD.

All of the selected bands will be in the studio throughout January - rehearsing and recording material - with the results available via the BYT03 CD album scheduled for a spring release. They will also take part in a professional photo shoot to create fresh, quality imagery that will be used throughout the remainder of the project, in their promotion, on the web site and in the Leeds Guide.

Where are the Morley Bands!! We find the fact that no one from Morley has been chosen for BYT competition a HUGE dissapointment. Did any Morley bands even bother to enter? If not why not? We have some of the brightest and even if we do say it our selves best young bands in Leeds, we should be up there going for the big prizes that these competitions have to offer. feedback to jane.arnott@morley.gov.uk.

The 27th of December also brought us bad news about Dub City.. Richard Thornton has decided to retire from the band.. Dub City will play their last gig with Richard on the 14th of January 2003 at Joseph's Well. We would like to wish Dub City all the best in their search for a new guitarist...The following is taken from Dub City's website...

In case you either didn't go to the Valley on Friday 27th or u were just plain deaf, it has been decided that RICHARD J. THORNTON is retiring from Dub City. This decision was made by Richard around 3 weeks ago, and Wainy and Paul understand his reasons for retiring, and wish him the best with whatever he decides to do in the future. Wainy and Paul have decided that they still enjoy being in the band, and therefore are actively looking as of now for a new guitarist. If you are or know anybody who plays guitar and likes the kind of music Dub City play, please contact Wainy at wainy@thisisdubcity.com . Thankyou for your support, DUB CITY

LAST GIG: Tuesday 14th January, Josephs Well. support from Next Autumn Soundtrack, Ungowa and Brain Freeze

Good News
The Leeds festival looks likely to go ahead in 2003. The small minded idiots who tried to spoil it for us true music lovers have failed in their plan.
This small article is from the Metallica Webpage....
There's a statement about their plans for appearances at next summer's festivals.

It says (on a page dated 12th December 2002) "the band is currently in negotiations to appear at the Reading Festival in the U.K.. Festival dates are August 21-24, Metallica's appearance date will be announced here as soon as it is confirmed."

However, it appears that there is an error in the dates given - it's likely that the dates for Reading &
Leeds Festivals will be Friday 22nd - Sunday 24th August.
Metallica have now confirmed themselves to play the Friday on their website. (please note that we don't mark any act as confirmed until confirmed by the organisers).
On the Reading Festival Forum i found theses bands are rumoured to play at both the Reading and Leeds Festivals.. The dates will not be correct as it is the reading Festivals dates..

Sunday

Stereophonics, Placebo, The Vines, Jimmy Eat World, Silverchair

Friday

Blink-182, Weezer, Deftones, Lostprophets, Bowling For Soup[confirmed on their site]

Saturday

Metallica, Limp Bizkit (Head from KoRn Is Helping Out), Audioslave, Queens of the Stone Age, Alien Ant Farm

Esclavage hit the recording studio...15th December 2002.

Esclavage have just recorded their first E.P.. They let us go with them to the studio's to interview them and take some pics.
Esclavage recorded their first E.P at the HOUSE OF MOOK.

Interview with Esclavage

This interview contains offensive material..Please read it only with consent of an adult!!

Interview took place on Sunday 15th of December at House of Mook Studios.

Esclavage are- Smirf [16]- Vocals, Aaron [16]- Drums, Woody[15] Bass, Leanne [17] Guitar.

What is the hardest thing about recording a CD?

Smurf- F***ing up and having to start again.

What was the best thing about recording a CD?

Aaron- Listening to it afterwards.

When will your CD be available to your fans?

Band- After Christmas holidays.

Did you learn anything about the recording process that you didnt already know?

Leanne- Its hard, if you make even the smallest mistake we have to start over again and it gets tiring.

Smirf- F***ing tedious.

You were given the opportunity to record this CD for free, how does this change your plans for future recordings?

Arron- We'll wait longer to do it.

Woody- Work on our Merchandise.

Smirf- Prostitutes

Leanne- I want a prostitute!

Without this opportunity when would your first CD have been released?

Smirf- This time next year.

How do you see the band going forward from here?

Smirf- Bigger gigs.

Will you be able to use your new CD to further your musical career?

All- Hell yeah

If yes what would be your next step?

Smirf-To get bigger gigs with bigger bands at bigger venues.

Esclavage are doing great now. Do you see gigging becoming more intense?

Woody-Yes, if we get enough people at the gigs and a nice pit. We like all that S**t.

Where do you see Esclavage in two years time?

Arron-Hopefully we may have a larger fan base. But we will most likely be doing things differently, i.e gigs, music etc.

How can people book you for gigs?

Call any one of us! Or e-mail to esclavage-drummer@hotmail.com

Esclavage- 0789 0745283

                   0113 2538190

                   0794 7409543

                   0113 2380259

Any additional comments?

Smirf- Well, Id just like to thank Jane for giving us the opportunity to record this E.P for free.

Aaron- We should record more often, its just so cool. It was just an ickle bit tiring but good fun though, erm..innit mush.

Woody- The CDs gonna be good but hopefully our live gigs will be better, louder and more intense than it. We try to stand for and convey chaos and power, it was hard to capture it on a Cd but I think we did ok.

Leanne- Yaaay sexy new geetar! Its been really cool playing for Esclavage, I cant wait til our next gig! Woohoo! Love and lollipops from Leannder xx

Woody-Yeah Hail to thee Esclavage, may you bring chaos wherever thou doth travel.

Arron-Y'alright pal?

WE ESCLAVAGE!!!!

Smirf-Bloody good that.

A special message from Esclavage.

As a band [Arron, Woody, Smirf and Leanne], we have only been together for three months and we have already played Battle of the Bands and Joes Well, playing well at both.

Personally we think that in those three months Esclavage have taken a step forward , becoming harder, darker, heavier and have gained depth. We are glad and grateful that people have come and seen us and enjoyed us and that you have helped us in every way possible- you know who you are!!

Soon we shall get back to regular gigging, and perhaps stomp our authority on the Morley, and maybe even the Leeds music scene.

Love

Esclavage x

Thanks for letting us share in your recording experience and good luck in your future career. Dont forget our E.P. !!!
